AIDWYCK is the Association in Defense of the Wrongly Convicted, founded by Rubin Carter, an American boxer who was wrongfully convicted of murder and later released from prison following a petition of Habeas Corpus after spending almost 20 years in prison. The letter states:
"Rubin Carter reviewed his [Kevin Cooper] case and the evidence thoroughly and, on behalf of AIDWYCK, took up Mr Cooper's case. Five days before his scheduled execution on February 10th, 2004, M. Carter went to California to join the effort to save M. Cooper's life. (...) No Governor, least of all a Democratic Governor who has earned worldwide respect for his progressive views, should allow the execution of a person who may be innocent."
