REVIEW OF "TELL THE WORLD ABOUT US": AN INSIGHTFUL PHOTO EXHIBITION ABOUT PRISONERS AROUND THE WORLD AND ON DEATH ROW IN THE USA

9/21/2018

Through the bars of his solitary confinement cell in a detention centre for political prisoners, a prisoner pushed a piece of paper into the hand of photographer Rune Eraker. There was just one sentence written on it:
                                            "Tell the world about us"
This was in 2001. A decade and a half later, Rune Eraker embarked on a four year project in which he sought out forgotten prisoners and others who had had their freedom snatched away. He says:
This exhibition is about them,
those who are imprisoned, isolated, tortured, steam rollered and sentenced - in the worst cases, to death. Some for what they believe in.Others are victims of unjust laws, prejudice, politics, regimes, violence, religion of the devastation of war.
But the exhibition is also about strength.  About courage, the capacity to suffer and endure.

Along famous people such as Edward Snowden and the Dalai Lama, the exhibition casts also light on unknown prisoners, such as prisoners on death row in the United States from the Save Innocents campaign, who have been fighting to obtain justice for decades. Those are Michael Lambrix in Florida (executed in October 2017), Charles Mamou and Tony Medina in Texas. So many more could be brought to light.
Mike Lambrix, Charles Mamou and Tony Medina
Some fight to prove their innocence, some have died already. All fight to preserve their dignity and determination, and need our help.

If you ask me to chose between my state and my voice,
I would be rather without state than without voice.
Edward Snowden

The Nobel Peace Center calls on "everyone who visits this exhibition not to forget, but to see, talk about and protest against injustice" and leave the last words to Norwegian writer Arnulf Overland in his poem from 1937 ("You must not sleep"):

"You must not sit tucked away at home and say:
"So sad, poor them!", and turn your face away.
You must not tolerate without a care
Injustice that you never had to bear!
I challenge you with all the breath I've left:
How dare you walk on past and just forget!"

The exhibition is open to the public from 14 September 2018 until 15 January 2019. It is subsequently due to be shown at Tromsø kunstforening and the Portuguese Center of Photography. A book has also been edited in support of the exhibition.

This exhibition will be shortly followed up by a new web show including the contributions of other prisoners in the USA. Please contact us  for any further detail.

NEW ART EXHIBITION PROJECT: CALL FOR PROPOSALS

1/28/2018

We are calling on for prisoner's art pieces in the context of a new web art exhibition that we will be organising later on this year.
Provisional title of the Exhibition:

Dreams of Peace, Freedom & Justice

What is it about?

An open theme exhibition on the theme of peace, freedom, and justice.

We are looking primarily for high quality pieces of art created by prisoners (or others in relation to them) for the purpose of conveying a message about their hope in peace, freedom and justice . It can take any shape or form:  Sculpture, written words, paintings, drawings etc.

This project aims to become an inspiring body of work, for the purpose of raising debate on possible reforms of the justice system, whether legal or social. We are looking for deeply personal, high quality of work.

Please note that we are not asking for any detail in respect to any criminal case. If requested, the work can be exhibited anonymously.

A word of guidance

The prisoners (and possible others who have an interest or a relation to them) are invited to reflect on their life,  think about what could have perhaps been done, at an earlier stage to help them ensure they would lead a happy and successful life:
Was it more care, love, humanity?
Was it just about meeting other types of people?
Was it about missing the right piece of advice, or someone to talk to?

One must feel the Soul Pain in order to understand it, when you are talking to a normal person about this thing this Darkness that feels like it's crushing you Drowning you, Smothering you taking all enjoyment out of your life it's hard to really explain it, It is a Empty Hole inside of your Soul that hurts really bad.

John, prisoner on death row.
Alternatively, if they so wish, we welcome any piece of artwork in relation to peace, freedom and/or justice to express anything personal they feel strongly about, give encouragement to others.

Thinking along these lines, anyone in prison can create a piece of art that can be either about a central issue (for example, some form of abuse or some regret) or a central aspiration (for example, a positive hope) — together, if possible, with a short word of explanation for the viewer to understand.

This project should be considered in its widest possible form and understanding — a project with freedom of expression is the key!

Prisoners can at their convenience either send directly a piece of art at:

NEW DOCUMENTARY PROJECT ON THE SUBJECT OF FALSE CONFESSIONS

11/18/2016

Update 16th December 2016

Thank you to all those already participating in the production of "The Closed Room", a documentary on false confessions, anyone wishes to help, they are almost there with their fundraising...

The message they just sent us:
Thank you so much for your help with sharing our message, we really appreciate it. WE NOW ONLY HAVE 24 HOURS LEFT ON OUR KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN! We truly believe that this documentary can make a difference in the fight for a more just and transparent justice system - but we can’t do it alone. We are so close, but need you’re help to reach our goal! Every donation counts! Please support our project here: http://kck.st/2fYSwcY

Update 18th November 2016

Kickstarter campaign for the production of the documentary on false confessions here.

November 11th, 2016

The Good Company Pictures is currently working on a documentary that focuses on the vital subject of false confessions and the injustices faced by those who are wrongfully convicted. They hope by drawing attention to this important issue, that they can engage people in a conversation that leads towards reform, protecting those abused by the flawed interrogation process.

The subjects of their film, defense attorney Jane Fisher-Byrialsen, Korey Wise (one of the Central Park Five), Renay Lynch and Malte Thomsen, share their stories to help support the arguments for reform.

In order to move forward, they’re asking for people to kindly donate a Tweet, a Facebook post or a mention in any newsletter.

This simple gesture would give them the much needed momentum in order to move forward. They’re hoping to get the word out about their film and the crowd funding campaign that’s soon to launch on Kickstarter.

By mobilizing our combined networks, we can bring about change and protect those caught up in this injustice.

NEW "ART REACH" EXHIBITION FROM SAN QUENTIN DEATH ROW STARTING IN GREENWHICH, UK, June 24th

6/5/2016

In collaboration with Amicus and the National Alliance for Arts in Criminal Justice, London based artist Nicola White will be launching a new art exhibition from death row in San Quentin in California.
Art Reach, which aims to enable inmates on San Quentin’s death row to express themselves creatively, developed following her own written correspondence with a prisoner over several years. She was put in touch with the prisoner through the charity Lifelines, which finds pen friends for prisoners incarcerated in the US on death row.

She says:
What I am particularly struck by,
is that men who live in the proverbial limbo, that stark neon-lit artificial world of incarceration, and who barely see daylight for more than a few hours a day, could draw upon resources and produce such material. It truly shows that creativity through art is one of our most base and irrepressible instincts.

“Art is the highest form of hope” –
Gerhard Richter

ART REACH will be on display at the Made in Greenwich Gallery, London, from 24th June - 6th July 2016.
Private view on Sunday 26th June, 4 - 7pm, where there will be an opportunity to meet Nicola and a representative from Amicus and find out more about the issues around death row
