THE FAMILY OF MIchael LAMBRIX ASKS THE GOVERNOR OF FLORIDA, RICK SCOTT, to reconsider granting an exceptional clemency hearing

10/4/2017

Below is the letter that has been sent by the Lambrix family to the Governor:

We, the family of Mike Lambrix,
would like to respectfully ask the Governor of Florida, Rick Scott to grant an exceptional clemency hearing for Michael Lambrix.

We know that our plea was rejected last year. However, we would like to ask again. We hope our plea can be heard: Please suspend his current imminent execution and hear our plea in person. Please grant a chance to Michael to express himself in person. His last clemency hearing was over thirty years ago. He never had a chance to be heard in person.

Mike Lambrix will be part of an exhibition at the worldwide renowned Centre for Nobel Peace in Norway. The title of the exhibition is “Noble is Man”. Mike was selected for this exhibition, and there is a good reason for that: Mike Lambrix has elevated himself over his thirty years on death row to become a noble man who shows there is hope in humanity. We are proud of him.

Not all the people are noble or perfect. For example, it is an established fact that Judge Stanley, who was assigned to hear Mike’s trial was biased in death penalty cases; he said that if he were allowed, right after he’d pronounce the sentence, he’d reach down by his left leg, come up with his pistol and shoot himself the defendant “right between the eyes”. This is what led a sentence be overturned in the case of Raleigh Porter.

Equally four jurors were related to the local sheriff's department at Mike’s trial; One of the jurors was the stepfather of the local sheriff's deputy who at that time was under FBI investigation for physically assaulting Mike Lambrix in the county jail several months earlier.
All these issues, and others, were procedurally barred in the appeal process.

We hope that the Governor, who is the ultimate decision maker in our state, will be also a noble man, just like Mike is in our eyes and recognize that all men, even judges, can be imperfect.  Thus, we hope that he grants Mike Lambrix an exceptional clemency hearing. In return, Mike will help others.  He has already earned his place in society.

Blessed is the fruit of the womb Jesus (…) Glory be to thy Father, and to the son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and never shall be, world without end. Amen.

Thank you.

Does Clemency exist in Florida?

10/3/2017

In 1979, former Govemor Bob Graham presided over the first execution in the country after the death penalty was reinstated.

Governor Graham steadfastly enforced the law by signing the death warrants for sixteen (16) men who were executed during his two terms in office.

However, Governor Graham also commuted the death sentences of six men during his tenure: Leo Alford and Clifford Hallman (1979); Darrell Edwin Hoy and Richard Henry Gibson (1980); Michael Salvatore (1981); and Jesse Rutledge (1983).

Governor Graham was the last Florida Governor to grant mercy in a capital case.

1987 - 1991:  NO CLEMENCY - 9 executions
In office:   Governor Bob Martinez

1991 - 1998: NO CLEMENCY - 18 executions
In office: Governor Lawton Chiles

1999 - 2007: NO CLEMENCY - 21 executions
(including one woman)
In office: Governor Jeb Bush

2007 - 2011: NO CLEMENCY - 5 executions
In office: Governor Charlie Christ

In his first term, Governor Scott was responsible for more executions than any other Florida governor since the 1976 reinstatement of the death penalty.

On August 24, 2017, Mark Asay became the thirty-second person to be executed under Governor Scott and the first person to be executed after the U.S.S.C decision in Hurst.

The next person to be executed (on October 5, 2017) is Michael Lambrix, who maintains his innocence. His family is currently respectfully asking the Governor to reconsider granting an exceptional clemency hearing.

FORMER DIPLOMAT AND FOUNDER OF OLDEST PENPAL ORGANISATION IN EUROPE PLEADS: PLEASE SPARE MY FRIEND'S LIFE

12/5/2014

Jan Arriens, a former diplomat and founder of LifeLines, the oldest penpal organisation in Europe, addresses the Commission on Offender Review in Florida with a video plea asking to spare the life of his friend Michael Lambrix, on death row in Florida. It is filed by the clemency counsel representing Michael Lambrix.

Jan Arriens started writing to Michael Lambrix 23 years ago, shortly after having founded LifeLines, a non campaigning, non political organisation, which purpose is to provide support through letter writing to prisoners on death row in the USA. According to him, the Departments Of Corrections throughout the USA often mention how such activity helps make prisoners become better human beings and easier to deal with. In Jan Arriens' words: "It extends their humanity".

Today, Jan Arriens as well as Mike's family and his small community of pen friends around the world are extremely worried that the State of Florida may decide to proceed with the execution and they hope that the Commission on Offender Review will give Michael Lambrix a favourable recommendation.
They all believe he is innocent of capital murder.

He says: "We would be all deeply shocked and devastated if this would proceed to execution. I know that Mike has had clemency reviews, but that has been a long time in the past, a lot of happened since then and if you are going to proceed towards execution, I feel that all possible avenues must be explored (...). I feel the case has never been looked at as an integrated whole".

M. Lambrix was indicted on 2 counts of first degree murder on March 29, 1983 on Clarence Moore and Aleisha Bryant outside his home. Clarence Moore was a 35-year-old career criminal, and a known associate of South Florida drug smugglers, while Aleisha Bryant was a 19-year-old local waitress who had just met Moore. Clarence Moore had also a record of violence towards women.
M. Lambrix always maintained his complete innocence in the murder of Aleisha Bryant, and that he
was compelled to act in in voluntary self-defense when he killed Clarence Moore, attempting to stop the violent assault of Clarence Moore upon Aleisha Bryant. His case is circumstancial. He has no prior record of violence.

At his first trial, the Glades County jury ended with the declaration of a mistrial on December 17, 1983, when the jury failed to reach a verdict after deliberating for 11 hours. The retrial jury found M. Lambrix on both counts of indictment on February 24, 1984.
The first clemency review took place in 1987. At the time, Michael Lambrix was facing execution with the electric chair. Facing an imminent execution transformed him as a man, and he feels he has already met with death.

Michael Lambrix wrote:  "I had reached the point of accepting death, at a depth of of the inner self that simply cannot be described. It's like something inside just lets go. And it was that "virtual reality" death. (...) There is no experience more intense than death and it's that experience more than anything else that tells me there really is a God".

Jan Arriens says: "He is an intelligent, sensitive, may I say decent person and I would be devastated if he were executed. To me, he has become something like a brother (...). So my appeal to the board is: Please recognize that and do not proceed to execution".

Clemency counsel, Adam Tebrugge, says:
"I am hopeful that there will be a new investigation into the Michael Lambrix case. His court hearings have been plagued by repeated errors and he has never received a full and fair judicial review. People from all over the world have been writing to me to emphasize that Mike's life has value and to plead against his execution. I am optimistic that Michael Lambrix might be the first person to receive clemency in Florida in over thirty years."
